Steering kits - Formula Renault History

2000 - New Formula Renault 2000 launched.

2001 - Steering sensor mounted on the end of the steering rack allowed in the UK. This required a slot to be machined in the pinion. This sensor required a blue aluminum bracket to mount the potentiometer. Very early versions of the bracket required more machining ( or a hacksaw ) to the top to allow the nose box to clear the sensor / bracket. This became known as the 2001 steering sensor.

2003 - New type of sensor allowed. This mounted around the steering column and proved very accurate and was protected from any front end accidents. Some drivers found their feet touched the sensor. Most teams now prefer the rack mounted sensor.

2003 -no changes

2004 - no changes

2005 - no changes

2006 - no changes. Racks have a slot machined in the pinion by the factory.

2007 - racks have a brass bush in front of the pinion. ( See images below ) If the brass bush is installed the blue bracket no longer fits. Teams should fit the alternative gold coloured bracket ( part #R167 )

STEERING SENSOR 2001 MODEL

Kit comprises of :
aluminum bracket ( blue )
rotary potentiometer

The aluminium bracket attaches to the steering rack by removing the brass cap that is on the front of the rack. Bolt the bracket to the rack with the bolts supplied. Bolt the potentiometer to the bracket using the bolt supplied taking care not to over tighten it.

Please note that this steering rack has no brass spacer between the pinion and bracket. The aluminum bracket that should be used here is coloured blue like the pictures above.

STEERING SENSOR 2003 MODEL

The potentiometer has the steering column running through the centre. The nylon bush is split and can be slid over the splines of the steering column and into position. The means of locating the sensor is free, but please respect the rules regarding drilling holes into the tub. Internal diameter of sensor is 20mm.

STEERING SENSOR 2007 MODEL

The 2007 kit is essentially the same as the 2001 with a modified bracket. Since the factory has introduced a brass bush at the end of the pinion the old blue bracket no longer fits. The 2007 racks requires the gold bracket.

rotary potentiometer
bolt M5 countersunk ( 2 )

The aluminum bracket attaches to the steering rack by removing the brass cap that is on the front of the rack. Bolt the bracket to the rack with the bolts supplied. Bolt the potentiometer to the bracket using the bolt supplied taking care not to over tighten it. Potentiometer requires trimming to get the nose box to fit.
